1:6 Scale Fish Tank

In the good old days when my children were young and still listened to me, meaning a very long time ago, my oldest got a fish as a goodie bag gift from an impressively creative mom giving an under the sea birthday party.  And although I was thrilled she didn't bring home candy, I don't think that mom realized what she started.

My daughter loved that fish.  She sat there for hours staring at the poor fish not realizing it was slowly running out of oxygen in that little plastic cup.   Knowing very little about fish except that when a fish swims on it side it is a bad sign I purchased a large glass bowl thinking all of our problems, actually my daughters and her fishes problems and there for my problems, were solved.

 The larger bowl was only a temporary fix.  It didn't take long for my husband, who loves all things gadget and believes that bigger is always better, got involved and my small fish in the cup problem began to grow and grow and grow.  Before I knew it my living room had a two hundred gallon fish tank with 20+ fish and a lot of very happy algae.  All because of a creative birthday party parting gift.

I think I would have preferred the fish tank below.  There are real fish in that tank.  Hard to believe.  This guy sells miniature that are amazing he can be found here : http://konenko.net/index-en.htm

Our gigantic fish tank did not come with us when we moved to our current home, and honestly I think I prefer the plastic version below (even though my husband and daughter would disagree).  It will never grow algae and the fish will never swim on their sides unless they become unglued.  Besides it fits perfectly on my black bookcase.

Vintage Kitchen Table in Playscale

What comes around goes around.  What was cool and trendy in the '20 to '60s has become cool and trendy again.  Can't say I am loving all that has come back (skinny jeans for instance), but the ceramic top tables with the bright colors and chrome finishes I am loving.

Table and chairs are made of wood and metal.  I must give credit where credit is due, there is a very talented 1:12 scale builder that gave me inspiration to make these items. She can be found at http://1inchminisbykris.blogspot.com.  She made a similar table and chairs from paper and metal tubing.

Shops in 1:6 Scale

Some of the most amazing 1:6 scale artists make dioramas of shops.  These are some realistic photos from Flicker that might inspire you.

 

 

One of my customers has shared the fabric store she made with a few of my display cases.  I am in aw of her work.  Every one of her photos are bright and cheerful and perfectly proportioned.  She uses mostly inexpensive props but puts them together beautifully.

Library Card Catalog in 1:6 Scale

Poetic Home has this gorgeous image of a library card catalog, full size of course, on their website.    These antiques are being retired from libraries as the computer takes their place but if you are lucky enough to find one they look and function beautifully in a home.  My sixth scale library card catalog below has nonfunctional drawers but has the look of the originals.  I used jewelry findings to make the drawer hardware.

 

Plants in Sixth Scale

 Plants bring life to dioramas and are an inexpensive way to accessories rooms.  Many of my plants I find at Micheal's.  Succulents start small so the life size small plants look like large plant in the sixth scale. Like the ones in the dish below.

 

A customer purchase the succulent for his stop motion production to use on his boat set below. Would love to know who built this set.  It is beautiful.

Some life size plants have leaves that look like miniature tree leaves so if you have a glue gun and a drill and a twig that look like it could be a miniature tree you can build a tree.  The tree below was made from a boxwood branch.  The boxwood had been trimmed for years so the limbs on the end of the plant had a lot of branching and looked a bit like a bonsai tree.  I just secured the branch to a ceramic plate with hot glue and glued moss on the branches.  Gluing the moss took about an hour because there is some artistry in making the moss look like branches but the materials are not expensive and are easy to come by.

 

The bowl and dish above were found at a dollar store and the terracotta pots below are Micheal's finds.  The tree in the photo below is growing out of a plastic pencil sharpener container.

 The plants above are 'growing' in weathered bolts I found while hiking with my husband in the desert.  We were searching for a rubber chicken that fell from the sky, but that is a whole other story.

Vintage Bedding

Vintage fabric and vintage inspired fabric is used on project after project on the web.  Some great examples are the adorable dachshund puppies below by AliceApple on Etsy, the quilt made of vintage sheets by Blessed Serendipity, and the map from Modge Podge Rocks.  I love the way the vintage fabric looks but I have never found a way to use them until now.  

I decide why not use the fabric for a sheet on a white cottage style bed.  The bed below was made from a vintage sheet... and a few other things.  The frame was made from tongue depressors, coffee stirs, half inch plywood, half inch and one inch square dowels, and one inch finales.  Most of these items can be found at The Home Depot.  The best place to find the wood coffee stirs is Smart and Final.  The bedding was made of a wash cloth from Target and yellow fabric from Johann Fabric.
